Countermyth

KategoriakEnglish

A countermyth is a narrative opposed to that established by an original,
primitive or hegemonic myth. Its birth is generally due to the need
for reaffirmation of an individual, group, culture or religion against
another. For example, the birth of Judaism could be viewed as a set of counter-myths
opposed to the surrounding mythologies. In our days, radical feminism
builds a countermyth in relation to men to oppose patriarchy. The
countermyths thus arise from dialectical relations between opposites
and confront the original myth to create their own space or establish
their hegemony in the common human territory.
